The Cayman Islands Department of Agriculture is distributing five Flex Farms hydroponic units to schools this year, which are capable of efficiently and economically producing a diverse range of foods throughout the year. The five hydroponics units were provided to the Cayman Islands as assistance by the Caribbean Climate Smart Accelerator, but the Department of Agriculture is considering purchasing additional hydroponics units for other government agencies at a retail price of approximately $5,000.
According to the USDA, a single Flex Farm (hydroponic device) can produce 25 pounds of lettuce in 28 days, occupying just nine square feet. After the device is plugged in and begins growing, the USDA will monitor the project to ensure the desired results are met and provide progress updates via social media.
