‘From Farm to Classroom, Innovative Teaching and Learning is Happening’ - Cayman Schools Introduce Hydroponics Equipment and Incorporate STEM Instruction

The Cayman Islands Department of Agriculture is distributing five Flex Farms hydroponic units to schools this year, which are capable of efficiently and economically producing a diverse range of foods throughout the year. According to a press release from the Department of Agriculture, this new initiative is part of the Cayman Islands Food and Nutrition Security Policy. Five hydroponic units have been distributed to Edna Moyle Primary School and Beacon Farms, as well as to the Ministry of Agriculture, and to Clifton Hunter High School on the North Side in the Minister's constituency.

The Cayman Islands Department of Agriculture said the partnership with CCSA is expected to benefit the local farming community and play a key role in the national school gardening programme at the primary and secondary school levels.The goal is to familiarise students with technology and sustainable agricultural practices and to provide a first introduction to agricultural training..

The final piece of hydroponics equipment will be delivered to Layman Scott High School on Cayman Brac in the coming weeks. The five hydroponics units were provided to the Cayman Islands as assistance by the Caribbean Climate Smart Accelerator, but the Department of Agriculture is considering purchasing additional hydroponics units for other government agencies at a retail price of approximately $5,000.

According to the USDA, a single Flex Farm (hydroponic device) can produce 25 pounds of lettuce in 28 days, occupying just nine square feet. After the device is plugged in and begins growing, the USDA will monitor the project to ensure the desired results are met and provide progress updates via social media.
